Hey God, It’s Me Again.
The beginning of the song “Wait For Me” by Zach Williams starts out with “Hey God it’s me, I’ve been lost a little while, walking all these miles, and I’m in need, Of some direction. ‘Cause down here it’s getting hard, I’ve been searching near and far, Help me believe.”
It made me smile just a little when I listened to the words I thought about them. When I am up in my office people come in from time to time. I hear the bells on the door I say “Hello?” With only a few exceptions, the response I get is almost always the same. Whomever is downstairs says “It’s me.” Or “It’s just me.” Sometimes even when it’s a visitor!
Now, I don’t mean any offence but some me’s I can recognize by the sound of their voice. But a lot of you me’s sound similar to other me’s and I don’t have any idea which me it is!
So, when I heard the start of that song of a person in dire straights reaching out to God in prayer and he says “Hey God, it’s me.” I had to smile just a little. I do something similar in prayer and there are billions of us Me’s calling out to God, but God actually does know which “me” it is that is calling out to Him.
John 10:2-4 says, But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
He knows each one of us by name. At Bible Study this week Matt pointed out how cool it was that 2500 years after an event in Nehemiah we still have the individual names of the people who were there and even where they were standing at the event! That is super cool! What’s even cooler is that God remembers each of them and each of us and knows us by name.
When we call out to God he isn’t thinking “which one is this again?” He knows us individually by name and Matthew 6:8b says for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. He not only knows exactly who it is calling out to Him, but He knows the desperate need we have before we even ask it.
We are promised that, He won’t ever forget us, and He won’t ever abandon us. Dozens of times throughout the Bible God says to us, as he does in Matthew 18:20. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Or Matthew 28:20b, And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” He knows each “me” what each of us is struggling with, and has assured us that He will be with me forever.
