Harvest Quilt Story — 2012
This is the last post in a series regarding how to make a community quilt. For the first post, click here. For the second one, click here.
Written by Sandy Kennedy:
PJ Kennedy found an old quilt frame on consignment at the Uniform Shop in Marion. It was previously used by the quilters of the Apostolic Friends Church of Grant County. It will now be Unity’s quilt frame for the Harvest Quilt. Beulah Willis who had the quilt frame helped us understand the design of this frame and put in a few stitches as well. Kathy Nall found the quilt block pattern: “Fields of Flowers”. Sandy Kennedy and Kathy chose material for the quilt strips, about 25 different fabrics, using brown, turquoise, green and blue tones. Kathy cut the strips. Piece makers made their choices of 5 fabric strips and returned the finished blocks by mid-April. Then the assembly of the blocks began in May, followed by the sandwiching and attaching to the frame. Since preparations for VBS were in full swing at the church, the quilt frame was set up in the Kennedy “parlor”. The quilting began around the first of June and finished the end of August. It was returned to Kathy for completion. The quilting template used was “Harriet Tubman” a flower-like spiral.
Those helping with this project were: Janet Bates, Janet E. Bates, Marilyn Bennett, Frances Bevans, Ginny Berry, Karen Biehl, Kathy Bitner, Jana Briles, Lynelle Brown, Lainie Brown, Connie Burke, Larry Burke, Brenda Curtis, Shari Day, Shirley Dilman, Rachel Fedor, Fannie Garland, Nelda George, Richard George, Diane Henry, Joyce Hostetler, Nancy Jett, PJ Kennedy, Sandy Kennedy, Irene Kinnard, Tana Rae Leak, JJ Leak, Faye LeMaster, Kathy Nall, Diana Nusbaumer, Melanie Rennaker, Joan Spargo, Carol Stultz, Debra Tinkle, Janet Vandeventer, Lori Warnock, Mary Warren, and Beulah Willis.
