Pumpkin Garden — Harvest Item

For three years in a row, Unity Christian Church has planted pumpkins in a little plot outside of the Wee Worship (Children’s) room. The idea behind this project is that, even though adults do the planting and most of the work, the children participate by checking on the pumpkins every week during Children’s Church time. We feel that they will take ownership of this project and thereby learn to contribute to Harvest of Talents for World Hunger.

The first year, the pumpkins were abundant, and we even had a pumpkin picking party. Last year, we had vines and vines and vines but no pumpkins. It was determined that we had a bug problem. The same bug problem plagued our patch this year, but it wasn’t totally a bust. It’s not enough to have a pumpkin picking party, but there are several pumpkins that will be sold to feed hungry people, and the kids had fun watching them grow all summer long.
