Campfire Crafters

This post was written by Jack Getchel of Lincoln Christian Church for their Harvest of Talents 30th Anniversary Prayer Calendar

As I look around the campfire, I am amazed at the diverse group that has gathered for the evening. There are people here from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, and Oklahoma. There are retired school teachers, farmers, school administrators, corporate secretaries, a retired school bus driver, piano teachers, and several other careers represented.

There are people of every political persuasion, several different religious denominations, liberals, conservatives, and independents.

As might be expected, the conversations are varied and lively, but “religion and politics” are not among the subjects. What would bring such a group together? A love for the Lake Superior North Shore! But, there is another thing that we all have in common. We are all committed to the purpose and mission of the Harvest of Talents.

What started with one has brought others into the idea. Each person in the group also has a talent that they have generously shared with the harvest. Two are carvers, one makes baby clothes, one is a stained glass artist, one makes wooden trucks, another makes wooden nativity sets. There are also knitters and of course, there are some that are just good at spending money.

For the past few years, this group has migrated to Lincoln for the fourth Saturday in October to share in the excitement of the Harvest and to have a brief reunion. It has become a very important part of our year and the glue that continues to hold us together as we all strive to reduce hunger in the world.

(Join us in Marion on the third Saturday of October every year for a similar event.)
