Bikes and Cans

This post is from Lincoln Christian Church‘s 2012 Prayer Calendar and was written by Brian Messner.

We like to take a brief get-away every summer to celebrate our anniversary. This year, we traveled to Alton, Illinois and very much enjoyed our time around the Mississippi River. One of our favorite things was our bike ride along the Great River Road.  There are several miles of paved paths with nice overlooks, historical markers, and flat terrain.

We noticed that there were many cans as we rode north from Alton, so on our way back, we found an errant shopping bag and began to pick up cans for the Harvest. So many cans — in the weeks, on the road, squashed flat, perfectly intact, dried out, and still sticky, newly tossed and long abandoned. By the time we got back to Alton, we had stuffed the bag full and started a second one. What a blessing to be able to enjoy our mini vacation, enjoy a nice bike ride, tidy the countryside, and help to feed hungry people all at the same time.

Opportunities to help the Harvest, to be the hands and feet of Jesus, abound if we just look for them.
