About the name “Unity”

Today, as has happened multiple times in the years I have been with UCC, I had someone ask me about our name.  They were slightly cringing while they asked.  They were slightly cringing because they thought that we were affiliated with one of the big “United” or “Unitarian” churches.  Typically speaking, churches with those names are on the more “liberal” end of the spectrum.  Sometimes extremely on the liberal end.  They were relieved to find that we are not.  While we’re not exactly Amish, we lean pretty well into the conservative end of Christianity.  So why the name?

Well, a bit over a decade ago there were two churches, Marion Church of Christ and Valley Community Christian.  One had just lost its Preaching Minister and had an older congregation.  The other had a younger congregation and a Preacher but had no building.  The two sat down to talk and, after seeing how it could be a blessing to both and advance the Kingdom of God, the two merged to form one new church, uniting in Christ to help spread the Gospel.  I wasn’t around at that time and it might not have been the name I would have chosen, just because of the confusion which sometimes comes with it, but it is a good name and I hope it doesn’t keep you from worshiping the Lord Jesus Christ with us.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:3   How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1
